Why Learner Experience Must Include SEND: Designing Digital Learning That Works for Everyone

Learner experience has become a central focus in digital learning.

Across education providers and awarding bodies, there is a growing recognition that engagement is not just shaped by content, but by how easy it is for learners to move through a platform, understand what to do next, and build confidence as they progress.

At the same time, conversations around SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) are becoming more prominent.

But too often, these two areas are treated separately.

Learner experience is discussed in terms of usability and engagement.
SEND is discussed in terms of compliance and support.

In reality, they are deeply connected.

Because if a learning experience does not work for learners with different needs, it does not fully work at all.

The shift from accessibility as a requirement to experience as a priority

Historically, accessibility in digital learning has been approached as a checklist.

Can a screen reader access the content?
Are captions available?
Does it meet required standards?

These are essential foundations.

But they do not guarantee a good experience.

A platform can meet accessibility requirements and still feel confusing, overwhelming, or difficult to navigate. For many learners, particularly those with SEND, that experience creates immediate barriers.

This is where the conversation needs to evolve.

From asking “is it accessible?”
to asking “is it usable, clear, and supportive?”

Because true inclusion is not just about access. It is about participation.

Why SEND reveals where platforms struggle

One of the most valuable things about designing for SEND is that it highlights issues that affect all learners.

For example, a platform that:
lacks clear structure,
requires too much interpretation,
or relies on inconsistent navigation

may still be usable for some learners.

But for others, particularly those with cognitive differences, processing challenges, or attention-related needs, these issues become immediate barriers.

What is often labelled as “low engagement” can actually be high cognitive load.

Learners are not disengaging from the content.
They are struggling with the experience around it.

This is why SEND is not a niche consideration.

It is a lens that reveals where design is not working as well as it should.

Designing for clarity benefits everyone

When platforms are designed with clarity in mind, the impact is broad.

Clear starting points reduce hesitation.
Consistent layouts reduce confusion.
Visible progress supports motivation.

These principles are particularly important for learners with SEND, but they improve the experience for everyone.

In practice, this means designing environments where:
learners always know where they are,
understand what to do next,
and can return without feeling lost

These are simple ideas, but they are not always easy to implement at scale.

And yet, they are often the difference between learners continuing or stopping altogether.

The role of consistency in building confidence

Inconsistent design is one of the most common challenges across digital learning platforms.

Different modules look and behave differently.
Navigation changes between sections.
Expectations are not always clear.

For many learners, this creates friction.

For learners with SEND, it can be particularly disruptive.

Consistency builds familiarity, and familiarity builds confidence. When learners know what to expect, they can focus their attention on the content itself, rather than figuring out how to move through it.

Over time, this has a significant impact on engagement and progression.

Moving beyond compliance to meaningful inclusion

Meeting accessibility standards is essential, but it should not be the end goal.

The real opportunity lies in designing experiences that are genuinely inclusive.

This means considering:
how learners process information,
how they navigate digital environments,
and how they manage attention and cognitive load

It also means recognising that inclusive design is not about creating separate experiences for different groups.

It is about creating one experience that works well for as many people as possible.

Why this matters now

Expectations around digital learning are changing.

Learners are used to platforms that feel intuitive, responsive, and easy to use. When learning platforms do not meet those expectations, the gap becomes more visible.

At the same time, there is increasing focus across education on supporting diverse learner needs.

Bringing these two areas together is not just beneficial. It is necessary.

Because improving learner experience and improving inclusion are not separate goals.

They are the same goal.

Final thoughts

Designing for SEND is not about adding complexity.

It is about removing unnecessary barriers.

When learning environments are clear, consistent, and easy to navigate, more learners are able to engage, progress, and succeed.

And in many cases, the changes required are smaller than expected.

But the impact is significant.

If you are currently reviewing your digital learning platform, it is worth considering not just whether it is accessible, but how it is experienced by a diverse range of learners.

If you would like to explore how a more inclusive, learner-focused approach could work in practice, our team would be happy to walk you through it here.
